SAVANNAH HISTORICAL BITES

The Dawn of Electric Ambition

In the sultry summer of June 1882, Savannah, Georgia, was a city on the brink of a luminous revolution. The Brush Electric Company of Savannah had just been formed, and by early 1883, the city welcomed its first electric streetlamps. These towering beacons of progress were ambitious, dangerous, and ultimately, impractical. Yet, they captured the imagination of the townsfolk, embodying the spirit of innovation and the promise of a brighter future.

Monstrous Marvels in Wright Square

The Wright Square streetlamps were unlike anything the citizens had ever seen. Weighing as much as seven tons and standing at a staggering height of 150 to 185 feet, these iron and tubing towers resembled the radio towers of the next century or the cell towers of two centuries later. They were a testament to human ingenuity and a harbinger of the technological advances to come. The local newspaper buzzed with excitement, announcing that two more towers would soon be erected on River Street to illuminate the streets and wharves under the bluff. These towers, too, would stand at an impressive 185 feet tall, casting their electric glow over the bustling waterfront.

The Morning News described the quality of the lights as "brilliant and the shadows formed are very sharply defined," painting a picture of a city bathed in a new, almost otherworldly light.

The Legacy of Light

In 2020, replicas celebrating the old 1883 light towers (approx. 1/3 scale) were erected on the Plant Riverside Plaza

Though Savannah's electric streetlamps were ultimately deemed impractical, their legacy endured. They marked the beginning of a new era, one where the possibilities of technology seemed boundless. The towering lights may have been short-lived, but they left an indelible mark on the city's history, a reminder of a time when Savannah dared to reach for the stars.

In the years that followed, the city would continue to evolve, embracing new innovations and technologies. But the memory of those towering electric streetlamps, casting their brilliant light and sharply defined shadows, would forever be etched in the hearts and minds of the people of Savannah.
